Vejer is an ideal centre for people interested in outdoor pursuits – walking, biking, camping, rock-climbing, surfing and para-gliding. As well as the beaches, there are huge and amazingly varied areas of natural and national parks nearby; cork oak forests, mountains, coastal salt-flats, pinewoods and marshes. For people looking for exercise and activity, Vejer has a sports centre and a gym, with the usual range of facilities: football, volleyball, tennis, weights, exercise machines etc.

Snorkelling, hiking, fly surfing, windsurfing and traditional surfing are all popular in the area. Great places to visit are the, Grazalema Nature Park up in the mountains or see the largest Mediterranean cork oak forest. Vejer is a popular place for paragliding and in Barbate, a fishing resort, 6 miles to the south of Vejer, there is both a canoeing club and a scuba diving club.

A good meeting place with numerous cafes and bars, is the Plaza Espana just in the centre of town. This is the ideal place to relax and make some new friends. Hidden away in the old quarter you will find a classic 11th century arch, which is part of a Historic Arab castle. Parts of the castle are open to the public, including the plaza de armas, which has wonderful views over the town and countryside. The dance studio in the patio of the castle is used by the school during their flamenco lessons. A must see whilst in Vejer is the Church of El Divino Salvador, which is built on the site of an old Mosque. Sacked during the Civil War, there is an elegant and attractive simplicity to its interior.

Santuario de Nuestra Senora de la Oliva- is a local chapel, which houses a 16th century carved image of the Virgin Mary. Half-way between Vejer and Barbate, there are pilgrimages and picnics here during the summer accompanying the Virgin to the Parish church and back again. Enter the courtyard of the Casa de Mayorazgo and walk through into its beautifully kept patio and climb off the corner tower of the old walls for a fabulous view down to Plaza de Espana. This house, although an ancient monument of great architectural interest, is still lived in by some of Vejers oldest families.

Vejer is full of good places to eat out and experience the Spanish cuisine. Some favourite restaurants are: Restaurant La Vera Cruz, Restaurant Trafalgar, and Restaurant el Jardin de Califa. There are lots of friendly bars to relax in with a drink at the end of a day studying. Why not try Bar Peneque, La Bodeguita , Bar Begines or Meson Julian? In the evening and on into the long Spanish night, el Tila, el Janis Joplin and el Bouh Bar offer their own special charm, with a terrace (or an open fire in Winter), a cellar or a roof garden.
